Eclectic is by far one of the most difficult decorating styles to pull of and yet is also the most rewarding when it’s done right. While eclectic living areas have been incredibly popular for decades, the concept of an appealing, charming, and inviting eclectic kitchen has only just started to become more widely known. Part of this has to do with the many appliances manufacturers no longer making just one style. Part of it is also because people have finally realized that there are so many different styles out there that they can actually co-exist quite well. There are also a lot of people who realize that there is much more to an eclectic kitchen style than simply choosing an appliance or two. It takes some thought, effort, and planning, but the end result will be a kitchen that invites people into it and have them come back for more.

Characteristics of eclectic kitchen design

One of the first things that an eclectic kitchen will have is that it will have lots of open shelves. This is probably the easiest way to distinguish it from other kitchen styles, as most other styles tend to have a lot of closed shelves or very few open shelves at all. When an open shelf is present, it tends to either be covered up, stuffed with items, or simply not put in view at all. The entire purpose of open shelves is to create plenty of storage space while making it easy to get to everything, which makes for one of the best traits of an eclectic kitchen.

Another characteristic of an eclectic kitchen that goes along with plenty of open shelf space is that the walls tend to be very light or neutral in color. This allows people to get a better feel for space without the heavy color and theme that can sometimes go with this type of room. While darker colors can help give a sense of depth to space, lighter colors help open the space and keep it open. The result is that you get the feeling of wide-open space, which is exactly what an eclectic kitchen design wants to convey.

Make the eclectic kitchen decoration more colorful

There are many ways that you can incorporate an eclectic kitchen into your decor. Because of the fact that it has so many different elements, it can easily become an interesting mix of styles that you’ve never before seen. One thing that an eclectic kitchen can have is a lot of cabinets — perhaps too many, or too few. If there is not enough storage in the cabinets, people will just opt for more chairs or barstools, or they’ll use those things in addition to the cabinets.

The next thing that an eclectic kitchen will have is countertops that are painted a tone or two different colors. Maybe the countertops are painted a lighter color, but the backlash is painted a dark color. Or maybe the countertops are completely white, but the backlash is painted a deep, rich brown. The idea is to create a “balanced” look, where the countertop and backsplash complement one another in tone or shade, rather than being completely different colors. These countertops can be painted any color as well; it’s simply that they don’t need to be identical.

How an eclectic kitchen looks charming

Another way that an eclectic kitchen can look good is with a range hood over the sink. An array hood like this over the sink can add a lot of light, and also provide some additional storage space for items that don’t need to be immediately accessible. Some people prefer the feel of having a full range hood above the sink, rather than a pull-out one, but either option can work very well. Of course, a range hood that sits on the floor can also be quite useful, if you don’t want to deal with the height factor.

Finally, one other thing that an eclectic kitchen might have is wood floating shelves in various sizes and shapes. Wood floating shelves are a great idea if you don’t want to use cabinets. These shelves are usually lined with coordinating or contrasting woods, so they can be used as a way to create interesting patterns in the room. You could also use them to save space and keep your meal planning organized, as well as creating a lovely new look to your kitchen.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of eclectic kitchen styles available to you. Some people might even choose to go with two or more of these styles, to get the best of both worlds. Regardless of what you decide, you’ll soon discover that there are endless possibilities when it comes to textures and fabrics. The choice is up to you!
